Yoga has been a precious gift to myself over the years. Now, I am helping to extend the gift of yoga therapy to our veterans in great need.
Studies abound that document the myriad benefits that yoga provides to people under stress. Few people endure more stress and trauma than our veterans who have been courageous enough to fight for our country. They face the horrors of war straight on and often return home shell-shocked and severely traumatized.
Although the need far outstrips the supply of services available to help our veterans, I was pleased to learn recently that the Give Back Yoga Foundation is working to bring yoga therapy to veterans throughout the Untied States.
Starting last month and going through June 2015, the foundation is raising money and awareness for Warriors for Healing, a program designed to "using the science of Yoga to heal the seen and unseen stressors of military and combat life."
Startling statistics about the number of veterans suffering from post-traumatic-stress disorder and details on how yoga can alleviate the numerous challenges veterans face upon their return can be found at http://WarriorsforHealing.org. You can also donate to the cause at that site as well. I have.
Yours for giving the gift of yoga to a veteran in need,
Laura Venecia Rodriguez, The Beginners' Yoga at Home Coach
