Daily yoga is an absolute priority for me! (I practice in the space above every day- i.e., 6 days a week at least)
The latest issue of Yoga Journal includes a feature on a renowed Philadelphia chef, Marc Vetri who, 12 years ago, began an Ashtanga yoga practice (an intense flowing yoga style in which the same poses are always done in the same sequence and which are known for producing a lot of heat and elimating toxins).
Vetri was apparently so impressed by the benefits of his yoga practice- better focus, greater ability to manage stress, more energy, lengthening the spine, limbering up, and especially important, getting in better touch with himself, that he has made yoga a priority in his life.
Vetri says, "Make what's important a priority. If it takes a back seat, it's obviously not a priority Yoga has never taken a back seat in my life." Wow- powerful words!
They made me stand to attention. Although yoga IS a priority in my life, a few other activities that I have "said" are important to me - I am chagrined to admit - have taken a back seat. But - no more!
If you are a yoga beginner and want to enjoy yoga's innumerable benefits, you MUST-MUST-MUST make yoga practice a priority. Building yoga into your daily lifestyle is essential - make it as integral a part of your schedule as getting sleep, brushing your teeth, and taking a shower. In my not so humble opinion - that is the ONLY way to do it.
Of course, life happens or as is often muttered under the breath, "s**t" happens and can get in the way. But on those days - you can still squeeze in a pose or two to maintain the rhythm of your practice and your commitment to yoga as a lifestyle. If you do so, you WILL stay on track - believe me.
So - what are you waiting for? Make yoga a priority in your life starting right now!
