When you do the backward stretch super slowly, you enjoy it even more...and it doesn't hurt!
Last week I wrote about the immense value of gentle slow yoga. Since last week's post, I have been reminded twice about why gentle slow yoga suits me so well. Today, I met with a woman, Kim, who is going to dogsit for me while I enjoy some family vacation days away at the beach. A close friend of one of my neighbors, Kim has been an athlete all her life (unlike me the consummate klutz) and engages in regular strenuous workouts.
Kim told me that she recently added yoga to the mix of her workouts and has gone to an occasional yoga class. However, for the most part, she watches Yoga Journal online videos to learn yoga poses that she has added to her routine. Kim mentioned that she had attended a few classes but found that "yoga hurt" when participating in a class.
Wow - that coming from a strong, athletic, active woman! But, no doubt it is true that many yoga studios offer classes that are rigorous and intense and can cause yoga to "hurt." However, I have never experienced "pain" from yoga because I have followed the "go slo" maxim.
Tina, one of the regular readers of this blog was kind enough to send me a video excerpt in which a yoga instructor demonstrates slow yoga and she mentioned that the slower type of yoga is catching on again.
I have included the video in this post - it is a "sneak preview" of a soon-to- be released DVD and I love what I see so far - gentle, "slo motion" yoga. It is soothing and energizing to boot.
If you have ever considered yoga but thought it way beyond your ability, I trust you will take the couple of minutes to watch this video.
Yours for gaining tremendous benefits from 'slo mo yoga.'
