This week, I am happy to share a guest post on creative ways to set up a yoga space at home.
Top Tips For Creating A Home Yoga Haven In 2016
By Stephanie Sylvester
Do you love yoga but find it hard to make time in your busy schedule for class? Life can often seem stressful, with a seemingly never-ending list of to-do lists, but making time for yourself is imperative. Those who practice yoga regularly are not only dedicating time to strengthening their bodies, but they are also providing themselves with self-care that sustains them through all of the stressors of day-to-day life. Fortunately, yoga is a practice that can easily be done in the comfort of your own home. At Modernize, we believe home should be a place that invokes joy and supports your lifestyle—so here are the top tips for creating a yoga haven in your own home.
Sun salutations are even better when there’s actual sunlight touching your skin. If possible, center your yoga area in a room with ample natural lighting. Your body will open up with the warmth of the sun, while the light lifts your spirits. If you’re able to open your windows or skylights, your skin can soak in a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Place sun-blocking blinds or curtains over the windows for the days that you desire a dark room for restorative practices. Or, simply do your restorative work in your bedroom!
Wake Up With Yoga
When you wake up in the morning, you are already in an ideal setting for a yoga session.
Keeps props such as a bolster, blocks, blanket, and eye pillow, in your bedroom and try to use them every day. Guided meditation (via Headspace) is also a perfect way to drown out distractions through your ear buds, while breathing in beautifully scented soy candles to ground your attention.
Make your bedroom a yoga retreat that you never want to leave. Keep your phones, laptops, and tablets out of the room if possible. If you rely on technology for DVD guidance or music that inspires you, remember to stay focused on your practice. Avoid distractions by turning your notifications off or putting your phone on airplane mode during your routine. Decorate with things that make you feel warm and beautiful and you will create a ritual of practicing poses in the comfort of your bedroom.
More Tools and Props To Keep You Going
Creating a space that you love for your practice is vital. Find a yoga mat that is just the right thickness and comfort level. Many instructors recommend wood blocks over foam blocks because they are better for support and balancing. Gel toe separators are also lifesavers that help many yoga enthusiasts to completely bliss out in ultimate comfort. Find the tools that speak to you and keep them where they are convenient and visible. Having these items in clear view serves as a visual reminder to make time for yourself and your yoga practice.
If you have the good fortune of creating a brand new space for your yoga practice, it is important to consider the building materials and decorative features that will go into your addition. Nobody wants to lie down on a cold, hard, ceramic tile floor, so choose flooring that is warm and inviting. Bamboo flooring is soft, flexible, and easy to clean after a particularly sweaty session. Your walls should be painted in colors that bring joy or a sense of calm, depending on your yoga goals. Create a home for storing your props and tools, in a spot that is organized but still visible.
Keep your yoga essentials convenient in a space that you find beautiful, and you will find yourself making excuses to retreat to your yoga haven instead of finding excuses to skip your practice.
